Deputy Mayor of Bellevue, WA Gets Promotion to Mayor – First Asian-American Mayor

Conrad Lee 2011

Tuesday night, while the Iowa Caucuses were soaking up all the media air in the room, Conrad Lee, a Republican, became the first Hong Kong born Mayor of Bellevue. Lee immigrated to the U.S. as a child. Since being an adult, he’s spoken at naturalization ceremonies where they swear in new citizens of the U.S.

Even among Asian-Americans, he’s a minority.  Most elected Asian-Americans are Democrats, and Asian groups tend to lobby for and support Democrat candidates.  Lee was voted in by his fellow councilmembers on the city council.
